How Children Adapt to Kindergarten at Elliot
Adapting to kindergarten is a big step for every child. At Elliot we approach it gently, individually, and without rush.

The first days of kindergarten — tears at the door, nervous parents, new faces. It is completely normal. How smoothly a child adapts depends largely on the kindergarten's approach.
What is adaptation and how long does it take?
Adaptation is the period when a child gets used to a new place, new people, and a new daily routine. For some children it takes one or two weeks; for others it can take a month or more. It depends on age, temperament, and prior experience with other children and adults outside the family.
At Elliot we never set fixed deadlines. Our approach: a child must feel safe first — only then will they open up, engage, and enjoy learning and play.
What do the first days look like at Elliot?
We start with short visits. The child spends a few hours getting to know the space, teachers, and other children. Parents can stay nearby for as long as needed — we never rush the goodbye.
Before a child joins, our teachers learn about them: what they love, what makes them anxious, how they react to new people, and any special routines or comforts. This helps us make the space feel familiar from day one.
The parent's role during adaptation
Parents are our partners. Every day we share how the child's day went — what they ate, how they behaved, what excited or upset them. If there were tears, we talk about it honestly and explain how we handled it together.
Our advice to parents: say goodbye confidently and briefly. Children sense adult anxiety. The calmer you are, the easier it is for your child. And always come back on time — predictability is the foundation of trust.
Signs of successful adaptation
A child has adapted when: they go to kindergarten in the morning without major resistance, they talk at home about what they did during the day, they know the teachers and other children by name, and they come home in a good mood.
